Budget Luxury Chiang Mai
Where to eat, sleep, and unwind across the Old City and Nimman, all of it at a fraction of resort prices.
Coffee & Breakfast
Cafes Worth Building a Morning Around
A mix from both neighborhoods, the kind of places worth planning a slow morning around rather than a quick stop.
Stories Cafe & Bistro
Old City · Tha Phae Gate
4.1/5 on Google, 850+ reviews. Australian style all day breakfast, a big drinks menu, good coffee and smoothies. Sister cafe to Gravity below, same owners, same easy going vibe. Gets busy, with both air conditioned and outdoor seating.
Consistently rated 5/5 on Restaurant Guru for food, service, and atmosphere. Known for its layered "Gravity" coffee and a genuinely excellent breakfast menu, think avocado toast, eggs benedict, fresh juices. Expect around 500 to 600 baht per person.
Goodsouls Kitchen
Old City · a second branch on Changmoi Rd
Fully vegetarian and vegan, but a destination even for people who are not, the room feels more like a design forward restaurant in a bigger city. Known for smoothie bowls, mushroom burgers, and a genuinely good cake fridge. Laptop free cafe. Good if you want to unwind and not be attached to your screen.
A small, hemp based vegan cafe with a loyal following. Avocado toast, chia pudding, smoothies, organic sourcing. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm, closed Monday. They also run sound healing sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Playworks Shop & Cafe
Nimman · near One Nimman
Part gift shop, part cafe. Known for colorful seasonal drinks and a genuinely well curated selection of local prints, stickers, and small gifts. Worth pairing with a Nimman afternoon.
Scoof
Old City · Si Phum
4.9/5 on Google, 90 reviews. Known as one of the best work-from spots in Chiang Mai, big indoor and outdoor seating, calm atmosphere, attentive staff. Easy to camp out for a few hours with a laptop.
Minimalist and design led, with a sculptural curved brick facade and an earthy interior, this is the cafe that best captures the "budget luxury" feel of this guide. All day breakfast and brunch, mixing Thai and Western dishes, plus a dessert and wine bar. Also sells its own line of handmade ceramics and homeware. A bit pricier than average for Chiang Mai, but reviewers consistently say it is worth it.
Brunch heaven. A minimalist bakery cafe with a warm Japanese and Korean inspired look, cream and wood tones. The shio pan is the reason to go, fresh and excellent. Ask for one if the case looks empty, they will make it to order, about a five minute wait. Other favorites include bagels, mushroom pesto toast, molten chocolate cake.
A craft donut cafe with a warm, minimalist look reviewers compare to a trendy Korean cafe, with excellent natural light. The dough is soft with just the right chew, not overly sweet. The mango sticky rice donut is the one to order, and the coffee program is well crafted too. Around 150 to 300 baht per person, open daily 9:30am to 6pm.
Where to Stay
Hotels Inside or Near the Old City
All of these sit within a few minutes' walk of Tha Phae Gate, so the differences between them come down to feel rather than convenience.
Under $100 a night
At Gate Thaphae Hotel
4.3/5. Three star, simple, free bikes for guests. Best value on this list if location is the priority.
De Chai the Deco Chiang Mai
9.0/10 on Expedia. Art Deco styling with hand painted tile work, outdoor pool, and an on site restaurant. Part of a small De Chai group of three boutique hotels in the city.
Away Chiang Mai Thapae Resort, A Vegan Retreat
9.4/10 on Booking, 450+ reviews. Certified vegan hotel, no meat or alcohol served on site, colonial architecture, two pools, full spa. Reads and feels more like a resort than the price suggests.
Arun Khiri Chiang Mai Hotel
Mixed reviews, 9.0/10 on Hotels.com and 8.4/10 on Trip.com, but only 3/5 on Tripadvisor with some service complaints. Four star, minimalist Lanna design, courtyard pool.
$100 to $150 a night, worth the splurge
PE-LA Thapae Boutique Hotel
4/5 on Tripadvisor. The one true splurge on this list, priced more like a small design hotel than a budget find.
Where to Stay
Hotels in Nimman
Same $150 ceiling as above, but this cluster sits around Nimmanhaemin Road instead of the Old City, closer to KLĀY, Playworks, One Nimman, and the MAYA shopping center. A good fit if the stay is built around Nimman's cafe and gallery scene rather than the temples.
Art Mai Gallery Nimman Hotel
9.2/10 on Trip.com, 294 reviews, 8.7/10 on HotelsCombined, 1,536 reviews. Four star boutique art hotel, 79 rooms, rooftop pool, gym, in-house restaurant and bar, art gallery and shop on site. Right in the heart of Nimmanhaemin Road, an easy walk to One Nimman and MAYA. I stayed here on a last minute booking and can vouch for the location.
BED Nimman Hotel, Adults Only
#17 of 543 hotels in Chiang Mai on Tripadvisor, 4/5, with a 9.2 to 9.6 rating on Booking and Expedia from over 1,000 reviews. Eight stories, 56 rooms, the only hotel in the immediate area with a proper open air pool, free bikes, and 24/7 espresso and fruit. Adults only, 18 and up, so it rules out family bookings.
De Chai Oriental Nimman
#141 of 534 hotels in Chiang Mai on Tripadvisor, 4/5, 8.5/10 on Kayak, 849 reviews. Sister property to De Chai the Deco in the Old City, same oriental design language, rooftop pool, steps from Nimman's cafes and galleries, about a 10 minute walk to One Nimman and MAYA.
The Craft Nimman
8.9/10, 501 reviews. No pool, but a genuinely well loved courtyard, an on site Craft Cafe with included breakfast, and a 1km walk to Maya Mall, One Nimman, and Chiang Mai University. The most low key, unpolished pick of this group, in a good way.
CHINO@NIMMAN Luxury Boutique Hotel
Five star, Sino-Portuguese architecture with just 28 rooms across four floors. Right by One Nimman and Ristr8to Coffee. Reviews skew genuinely glowing, guests repeatedly describe it as a return trip hotel. Higher room categories run past $150, so specify the standard room when booking.
U Nimman Chiang Mai
Five star, 147 rooms, industrial modern design with Lanna touches. 9.1 to 9.2/10 from nearly 3,000 reviews. Rooftop pool and bar, wine bar with library, full gym. The most polished, resort-like option on this list. Deluxe and king categories climb toward and past $150, so specify the standard room when booking.
One More Option
A Bit Further Out
ANA Park Chiang Mai
Four star, well reviewed for room size and cleanliness, shuttle to Central Festival mall. Good option for someone who wants a more modern build and does not mind a short ride into the Old City each day. Sits comfortably in the under $100 tier too, just geographically separate from the Old City cluster above.
Getting Around
Tours
Co van Kessel Bicycle Tours
Half day and multi hour guided bike tours through the Old City back alleys, local markets, and out into the surrounding countryside, one route finishes by songthaew. Over 30 years operating in Thailand, consistently well reviewed. Book Here
Wind Down
Massage & Spa
Same logic as everything else here, good quality and a fair price, rather than street corner cheap or resort splurge.
Old City
Let's Relax Spa
Tha Pae branch, Ratchadamnoen Rd
Part of a well known Thailand-wide chain, 20-plus years running, Lanna style blended with modern loft design. Traditional Thai massage, aromatherapy, hot stone, herbal compress. Reliable and consistent rather than a hidden gem, which is exactly the point, a safe recommendation for someone who wants a sure thing.
Makkha Health & Spa
Ratchadamnoen and Ancient House branches
The Ancient House branch is set in a renovated 60 year old teakwood Lanna home, the Ratchadamnoen branch has a Modern Wood Zen design right on the Sunday Walking Street. Reviews consistently mention the mango sticky rice served after treatments and a complimentary shuttle. A step up in atmosphere from Let's Relax at a similar price point.
Fah Lanna Spa
Old City branch, Wiang Kaew Rd
4.6/5, multi award winning, World Luxury Spa Award, Thailand Tourism Award Hall of Fame. Traditional Lanna style building with greenery and water features. A 2 hour treatment runs around $26, more elaborate packages run up toward $60. Also has a Nimman branch below.
Nimman
Let's Relax Spa
One Nimman branch
Same brand and reliability as the Old City branch above, red brick and vibrant colors instead of the Lanna loft look, surrounded by Nimman's cafes and shops. An easy pairing with a KLĀY or Playworks afternoon.
Nimman House
Running since 2003
Private single and double treatment rooms, including couples' options. Reviewers consistently call it a luxurious experience at an affordable price, a Thai oil massage runs around $15 for 60 minutes. Less polished branding than Fah Lanna or Let's Relax, more of a well kept local favorite.
Fah Lanna Spa
Nimman branch, Nimmanhaemin Rd Soi 15
Same award winning brand and pricing as the Old City branch, a good pick if you have already tried and liked that location, or if you would rather book once and not think about which side of town you are on.
